Card needed a lead character for the book and decided to recycle a protagonist from a short story he'd written. It adds a ton to the story and does a good job being a completely different and exciting story. It's brilliant. SotD has an entirely different setting and plot from Ender's Game but it's a powerful book. The way he misses Valentine, loves and loses Jane, loves Novinha, emphasizes that to understand or know someone is to love them. This book made me feel things and it’s been quite a while since a book has affected me in this way even though I’ve been reading a lot recently. This book could have very easily been a family soap opera- esque drama or a war book that celebrated human dominion but it wasn’t. Speaker is a much more "intellectual" book, if that makes any sense. The third book, Xenocide, if pretty good too, although it gets a little weird at the end. None of the sequels are as good as Ender's Game, and they're all weird. It's so damn depressing. That being said, Speaker for the Dead is one of the best novels I've ever read. There is so much more about humanity, human nature, humanity's place in the universe and such in this novel. Recently though, I wen't back and read all of the books again (about 12 years later) and while I enjoyed Ender's Game, it was absolutely nothing compared to Speaker for the Dead. I used to get colds once every two-three weeks, but I haven't gotten any now in six months since I started taking Vitamin D. I don't know, but I think my skin improved as well. If you're looking for Ender's Game Part 2, you'll be disappointed with Speaker. I thought it was really good but totally different. The Shadow series more closely resembles that book, however Game and the next three books in the Quartet are better books in my humble ass opinion.
