The city's development since the 1950s has been related to its location to Interstates 44 and 244 as well as to State Highways 11, 51, 64, 75, 169, and 412. Electric trolleys followed the neighborhoods as they developed further and further from downtown.

While the full story of Greenwood’s second erasure is still being pieced together by community members, historians, and anthropologists, all recognize that a series of sweeping urban renewal projects are largely to blame. The rail line, extended from Vinita, served local ranching interests.

Tulsa's origins begin in the late 1820s with the removal of the Creek from their ancestral homes in Georgia and Alabama. Five different Native Indian tribes were relocated to the Green Country of Oklahoma in the 1830s, after the passing of the Indian Removal Act of 1830. The ranch house, located near present Thirty-eighth and Trenton streets, later served as Tulsa's first post office, with Josiah Chouteau Perryman the first appointed postmaster.

The 1970 census counted 330,350 inhabitants of Tulsa proper.

Other aviation enterprises have also bolstered the local economy. Through the years Tulsans have been served numerous media outlets.

In 2010 Tulsa's population of 391,906 were 62.6 percent white, 15.9 percent African American, 5.3 percent American Indian, and 2.3 percent Asian. Tulsa changed from a cow-town to a boomtown with the discovery of oil in 1901 at Red Fork, a small community southwest of Tulsa.

The earliest recorded settlement in the area of modern day Tulsa was in 1836. Other amenities, including higher education, quickly developed.

Soon many Creek turned to cattle raising, and by 1879 George Perryman established a ranch that covered most of present southern Tulsa.

In 1999, OSU “took over” the University Center through the passage of a law that designated it as Tulsa’s primary public university.

While there is a plaque that recognizes its history at the bottom of the hill, the Gateway Tower’s dominance of the hill is quite literally a representation of its power over historic Greenwood land.

According to historian Hannibal Johnson’s book Black Wall Street: from Riot to Renaissance in Tulsa’s Historical Greenwood District, the United States experienced a free market economy boom in the 1950s and 1960s favoring large corporations over locally-owned businesses. After white flight and all the urban renewal construction, the North Side became separated and isolated from the rest of Tulsa, which would somewhat result in the large decline of most of the North Tulsa community.

All socioeconomic classes were represented in that space, from “negro shanties” to a large Black middle class. While new to this position, she has been a part of the campus since it was the University Center at Tulsa and grew up in North Tulsa.

In recent years, OSU-Tulsa has appeared to flaunt their takeover of Greenwood, most notably and visibly by building the “Tulsa Gateway Tower” on Standpipe Hill. Tulsa conducted a number of water studies, to no avail, and by 1920 the city's population had grown to 72,075. Just two years later, in 1900, Tulsa had a population of 1,390. Some public work projects, such as the Twenty-First Street Bridge completed in 1932, were built by the Works Progress Administration. Tulsa's north side originally referred to the area north of the Frisco Railroad tracks up to the northern city limits. White settlers continued to push forward, railroads moved into the territory, and in 1892, the land was officially opened and all tribal members were forced to accept individual allocations of land. However, as the downtown was being redeveloped, retail establishments began to move to outlying areas where new residential neighborhoods were springing up.

Other institutions of higher education that continued into the twenty-first century included Tulsa Community College, Oral Roberts University, and Oklahoma State University–Tulsa.
