Barn Swallows will nest in barns, under decks, porches, bridges, and docks. Conley SREH opening. The average number of eggs per nest is four to six. Their martins have had excellent success raising young in the ChirpyNest. Removable nest trays allow for thorough inspection, easier nest checks and faster nest change outs. By incorporating the screen bottom tray,  the nest surface sits above the cavity bottom and since the cavity bottom is sloped, any free moisture entering the cavity will drain to the back of the cavity and flow out of the compartment. Martin houses should be placed in an open location, at least 40 ft. from trees or buildings. We recommend ensuring that the house is open and cleaned out before the first martins return in early March in Tennessee. Martins, being communal nesters, require condos to nest and propagate and because of their nature of leaving the colony to feed, the sparrows and starlings often slip into their unguarded nests and do their dirty work, destroying eggs, young and even an occasional adult that happens to become trapped in the cavity. Some weather conditions may contribute to a large increase in the population of external parasites normally found in martin nests, including fleas, nest mites, and blowfly larvae. If commercial guards are not available, you can fasten hardware cloth (2" x 4" mesh) to the outside of the house, creating a protective cage that can be removed for nest checks and monitoring.

The female usually selects a mate depending upon the condition of the nest. With out the leafy layers the larvae burrow to the nest bottom where they fall through the screen and lose access to their host. Nestlings are often exercising their wings (flapping) prior to fledging, which can stir up the dust particles from the DE and may be inhaled by the nestlings. Frayed rope or cable should be replaced. After four Martin seasons I have fledged 584 young from 163 nests, with an 87% fledge/hatch rate in the ChirpyNest cavities. Flat bottomed houses allow water to seep beneath the walls and that moisture is absorbed into the nest material.

Outside air enters through the opening in the cavity bottom creating a natural air flow throughout the Martin nest cavity. Make sure all the doors are closed and caps on the gourds and all the plugs are removed from the cavities. Diatomaceous Earth (DE) is also not recommended for use in martin nests. Even weather tight housing can have issues with wet nests as water drains off wet parents and normal respiration of occupants can build up as condensation. How:  Lower housing and check each cavity. Record the stage of nest building, number of eggs and/or hatched young. Opening allows for flow through ventilation and drainage keeping cavity cool and dry.

Use of a predator guard on the nest pole is recommended.
