Poor sportsmanship is basically the crutch that most gamers live on. It feels like the Betrayer can play an honest game all the way up to when they go last and just eat all the food, create waste, make noise, kill characters and they can lower morale massively all in 1 turn.
We very rarely play Outsider cards when we receive them and most players are shunned when they try to play them anyway. This means that a betrayer has to fulfill a difficult secret objective in time for the turn where she gets to act last, AND do so while not arousing suspicion. Dead of Winter is a thematic semi-cooperative game that manages to use a few simple mechanics to shine a bright spotlight on the tension between players. No, they're going to take the colony down with them. Spiking the crisis as a loyal colonist (very minor spoiler). They might point out that you could be the betrayer and you're gonna take the cards and not use them, but that would be stupid since if you did that everyone would know and you'd be immediately exiled; also offer to take the 2 fuel he was going to put in, then someone else who has a survivor in the same place, in their turn they offer to take and put in the 2 food the potential betrayer has. It shouldn't be an impossible task to figure it out, very few traitors will be overly helpful throughout the game, and if they have been, then you're probably likely to be able to win even with them trying to screw things up.

Is it fair to tank the game if you can't win and you are not a traitor? Thematically its brilliant. Betrayers will play nice for a while, and they can't risk getting exiled and their objective changing. Finding betrayal variant bums everyone out?

Name: This is the name of the survivor. Is anybody else having this issue? It's incredibly easy to lose 6 morale this way and it's impossible to spot the betrayer because they can behave in such a way that makes them seem good the entire game. Part of the game for the loyalists is to overcome the obstacles that the betrayer presents.

If they refuse, then they might be a traitor. Players are faction leaders who must work together to ensure the colony's survival through incoming zombies and lack of supplies. Nobody is going to sit back and say, "Ah, shucks, alright, I'll just be nice since I can't get the cards I need." No clue if you are playing the game this way as you haven't given much information. it's one thing if a loyalist tanks the game because they can't win their objective just to spite the rest of the team, but the betrayer by definition is all on his own.

Yeah trash is very rarely an issue for us, it was just one possibility.

Our playgroup has been playing Dead of Winter for a little while and really enjoying it. You are not the first person and won't be the last, who feels this way.

That can definitely make you an easy target for the betrayer. The problem is that, if the betrayer knows they can't win, they can easily make it so nobody else can win, either. Should you be competitive about your secret objective? Another commonly missed rule: you can move each survivor only once per turn. :). Some things to remember, always read the crossroads, but when I'm teaching new people, I don't read them for the first 1-2 rounds. by ZAZU79 Mon Jul 18, 2016 11:03 pm 6: Tue Jul 19, 2016 11:47 am by wmreed. I won't go into detail but two pieces of advice I would give are a) always assume there's a traitor and plan for what he/she might be able to do, so even trying their hardest they can't screw you over, and b) exile. by LeximusMaximus Fri Oct 31, 2014 6:42 pm 14: Fri Nov 7, 2014 5:05 am by Sydcomebak.

As you get better with the game, you'll find your opinion shift to more that's impossible for the Betrayer to win. Goal: The task(s) that you must accomplish in order to win the game. If they hand over 2 fuel, great, they've helped out, they have less power for their last turn. This definitely isn't the case. The game is certainly possible when played to win. If someone has given you reason to believe they might possibly be the traitor then exile them. he shouldn't feel guilty about ensuring the other team loses if he can't win either. The game is certainly possible when played to win. Our playgroup has been playing Dead of Winter for a little while and really enjoying it.
Generally Betrayers don't see their goal as being to win, just as being to stop everyone else. The personal goals just means everyone sort of has to occasionally betray the group in order to ensure they win.

After seeing so many posts about how easy it can be for a betrayer to win in Dead of Winter, I think that rather than further discussing the potential havoc a betrayer may cause, we should instead start focusing on the different ways to deal with one.

It just doesn't lead to particularly fun gameplay. Clearing the trash and barricades. My main issue with the traitor is that you can play a game that makes you seem like a good player and then have it all crash down when you are the player going last. If they say they're gonna put 2 fuel in for the crisis, say ok, but point out that since they could be the traitor, if they gave you those 2 cards, you could put them in now, and they won't have quite so many cards.

You're going on a magical journey, just don't stop believing. Otherwise, you would simply exile the betrayer on the next player's turn.
