Plus, its theme tune, The Rope and the Colt, is sung by Scott Walker.

In this bleak tale of revenge and rape, much of the brutality is implied rather than graphically depicted.

That latter is troubling, but given that (a) it is not depicted exploitatively (even if it is unnecessary to the plot) as it is entirely off camera and (b) the perpetrators are not glorified in any way--they are proven to be cowards and scoundrels already when it happens--I can't say the film used it in a way that would really detract from the film. Whilst demonstrating an unnerving ability with a gun, there is a definite reluctance to become too embroiled with Maria's plot.

The main characters are bedraggled shells, nothing to live for except the immediacy of the central situation. Plus there's a killer theme song sung by Scott Walker. Wily roving gunslinger Sartana arrives in a small town and tries to find a hidden fortune of half a million dollars in gold and two million dollars in counterfeit money. After witnessing a brutal massacre, the legendary hero Sartana is ready to do some investigating. Bleak and stylish French western with a kick-ass soundtrack and some pretty unique quirks. Dario Argento is credited as co-screenwriter in the film, while Hossein insists Argento had nothing to do with it. Love the ending to this more than anything else. Overall this is spaghetti western with its own unique identity.

2014.

The Western equivalent of a Scott Walker song (and no, not just the theme song). From an interview with Robert Hossein for French TV in 1968:- Was it the Italians' success that encouraged you?- Not at all.

The cinematography is gorgeous, and Hossein's father André Hossein provides a superb score reminiscent of the best of Ennio Morricone. Watched Jul 04, 2014. And of the various Euro-Westerns I've seen by now, this is one of the finest. And, although the story itself probably has little to set it apart from many other films within the Euro Western genre, it more than makes up for it with its effective use of camera work and great character portrayal. Director (and star) Robert Hossein expertly captures a feeling of death throughout the film. First of all, Michele Mercier is incredible, her close ups are filled with grief, bitterness, and anguish.

Balls to the wall stuff here.

With this prisoner in her custody, Maria has the perfect ransom to deliver a perfect revenge on the Rogers gang.

Greed also rears its ugly head, and there's a moment that I assume was a brutal rape that happened off camera.

Maria seeks revenge on the killers of her husband.

Scott bleedin' Walker. Another interesting aspect of this Western is the lack of epic gunfights.

I don't think you need to be inspired by success to make a film. The adopted son of a preacher comes upon a village that is under the thumb of a deranged ex-Confederate officer, who is - among other things - stealing land from the locals with phony land grants.

The performance of writer and director Robert Hossein, in the lead role, may not have the cool of Lee Van Cleef or Clint Eastwood, but Michèle Mercier is really great as the conflicted, but increasingly heartless Maria. Endlessly spinning roulette wheel. That aside, this is a great genre film. In this film you got to be pretty tough, whether man or woman, to to make it to the classic conclusion. Lyricism of the movie is beautifully conveyed through it's central location: big vast desolate ghost-town and brownish mythical landscapes. Almost everyone in the tiny town of Indian Creek seems eager to buy up the property left ... See full summary ». Instead, distraction and entrapment serve as the main tension-builders and conflict-resolvers until it all ends in absolute violence. Hossein creates a forebodingly dire ambience nearly unparalleled in the genre. The lead, played by Robert Hossein (who also directed) is dull as dishwater, the plot is opaque, and the film lacks the nasty zip of its counterparts.

Action. /*produced with Dario Argento*/. A worthy homage to Sergio Leone and on par with some of his finest work.

There are a few showdowns, but none of the Leone-esque dances of bullets and dust save the very last one.

A melancholic, fetishistic gunfighter is drawn into a vengeful and tragic kidnapping plot by his widowed ex-lover. Acting-wise, this is deliberate and with force all the way through.

04, A French Western that feels less like the West and more like some decaying, American purgatory.

This is no copycat Leone film however, and firmly stands up on its own merit.

This film is quiet, dramatic, heartbreaking, and is so much more than a genre film.

Cemetery Without Crosses 1969. More details at [...] No, it's more to do with our childhood dreams. […] So, we've tried to make the first French Western, without resembling or imitating the Italians, or, for that matter, imitating the Americans. With the scene now set, the bloodshed and twists to the story soon commence. The character of Manuel is quite unlike any other main western lead that I have seen.

Hossein, who both played the part of Manuel and directed the movie, plays this solemn and complex character superbly.Hossein's direction is really eye catching too, with the camera work demonstrating more than a little nod in the direction of a certain Mr Leone (to whom there is a suitable credit in the end title sequence). Despite opening the film with a shocking sequence of death it slow and precise moving camerawork is able to create very calm and quiet atmosphere and sustained it throughout the movie. A gunman donning a single black (giallo) glove before killing his targets, as if he already has one hand in the grave.

A stylishly grim tour de force in visual direction.

Cemetery Without Crosses is a lean, Sergio Leone-inspired spaghetti western that more than lives up to its tough title.

Like Sergio Leone's westerns, the images in Cemetery Without Crosses of the American West as a bleak and desolate place are what capture and hold your imagination while the story of vengeance plays out. Made by fans in Auckland, New Zealand. Cemetery Without Crosses is without a doubt the classic desolate ghost town Euro-western. Naturally, a bunch ...
